Scaffolding Erectors

Scaffolding erectors erect scaffolding for buildings and ship structures. They install ladders, handrails, walkways, platforms and gangways and erect, move and dismantle various kinds of scaffolding such as frame scaffolding, mobile tower scaffolding, tube clamp scaffolding and system scaffolding.

Scaffolding Erectors

Scaffold erectors must be able to work at heights and physically strong and agile as they use power tools and lifts. A good sense of balance is also important. They work indoors and outdoors and their job demands that they work in all types of weathers and be willing to travel to various work sites which may be far from home. They must be well organized and able to follow instructions to erect scaffolding safely and correctly. A good eye for detail and the ability to identify potential hazards such as overhead power lines, fall hazards etc. is preferable.

Training

Non experienced scaffolding erectors are taught erection procedures and safety regulations. They also need to know about scaffolding components and materials, the use and care of equipment and how to interpret building plans and diagrams. Such training happens in apprenticeships and formal training courses. Both classroom training and hands-on practice form part of this; these are performed in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Construction Industry Scaffold Standard.

Scaffold Construction

When erecting a scaffold, the erector will start the task with ensuring that all scaffold components have been delivered and that none of them are defective: any that are must not be used. The erector must make sure that the foundation of the scaffold is stable and sound. It must be able to support four times the maximum intended load without displacement. It is important that the erection always starts at the highest elevation point which will allow the scaffold to be levelled by installing cribbing, screw jacks or shorter frames under the regular frame and spares the erector team from having to excavate.

The scaffold is now erected by strict adherence to standard erection-regulations. There are certain requirements imposed by OSHA which dictate that if, for example, planks that do not have certain hooks are used, these must extend over their supports by at least 6 inches (15cm) and not more than 12 inches (30cm). A cleat must be nailed to both ends of wood planks to prevent them from moving. When one level (or lift) is completely erected the erector must ensure that an access ladder is installed on the end frame.

Health and Safety

Following all Health and Safety regulations properly is crucial. The erectors must certify that all work platforms are fully decked and have a guardrail system or personal fall-arrest system installed before it is turned over to the scaffold users.

Scaffolding Jobs

Common opportunities scaffold erectors can hope for is the responsibility of participating in or directing large scaffold erection projects. Scaffold erectors may be part of large international scaffold groups and in this way, create an opportunity for themselves to build their careers through active participation in large projects like, for example, the erection of scaffolding for the construction of large sports stadiums or skyscrapers and other buildings that impress through their revolutionary architecture. Many scaffolding jobs are also available in small local scaffolding firms: a look through the local phone book will reveal many companies that could be a source of employment for a hard-working scaffolding erector.
